^H^W^k^What's New - Kingdoms v2.21^L^C
KINGDOMS 2.21 RELEASED 30th June, 1997.
Following are the changes incorporated in Kingdoms version 2.21, the
previous public release being Kingdoms 2.20. Sysops - Please see
readme.!!! for installation information for this release. Whatsnew.221
in the distribution archive contains a straight text listing of all
changes.
^H^WChanges affecting Players
^B─────────────────────────
^L^C*^W The option for a player to change the format of his/her name is now
available on the Misc menu. Note the name itself cannot be changed,
but color codes and case can be modified if desired now. The reason
names cannot change is that all recons throughout the realm would
suddenly not find the person who changed their name and any agents
owned by the player would be lost immediately.
^L^C*^W All game documentation has been fully updated, including the indexed
online docs for players. If he/she has not already, please ask your
Sysop to make the full game documentation available on his/her BBS. As
well as being online, Kingdoms documentation is now distributed it
plain text format and fully formated in MS-Word v7.
^L^C-^W More wonderful ANSI's have been added to the game, thanks once again
to Black Wolf's marvellous efforts!
^L^C-^W A major addition to the game for Local player interest, Kingdoms now
offers a fully fledged Tavern! Amongst other things, this much
requested facility for local player trading (trading both items and
gold) is now available in Private Rooms in the Tavern itself.
Following is the 'Overview' text from the Kingdoms v2.21 Player
Documentation, which has been fully updated to discuss and explain the
options available to you in the Tavern.
Tavern Overview & Excerpt from Kplayer.Doc.
What player doesn't need a fortifying mead, or perhaps something
stronger, from time to time? The Tavern is the place to go to get the
taste of blood and dust from you in Kingdoms! While much of Kingdoms
is devoted to InterBBS activity, the Tavern is a place with purely
'local' facilities. Within the Traveller's Rest, you'll find a number
of interesting things to do and people to meet. You can drink
yourself into oblivion (Author tip : fighting Monsters if you're
drunk is not generally a good idea!) or sip quietly on a glass of
water if you wish. You can take a Private Room where you can meet
with and trade items (including gold) with other players in the game.
If you'd prefer, you can stay overnight here too rather than in your
castle, though staying overnight has both advantages and
disadvantages you'll want to consider depending on your
circumstances. Of course, you can also sign the visitors book or read
the writings of others who have been here over time. A number of
others (residents of the town, not necessarily other players) use the
Tavern, of course, and meeting them usually provides an interesting
interlude. Some are friendly and can, if the mood takes them, offer
some very valuable items and/or advice to the Player who happens to
meet them. On the other hand, some are not so friendly and will
probably try to kill you if you bother them without invitation. Some
you won't know about until you try certain actions with them. Without
giving too much away then, if you want a break from the rigours of
ling and maiming your opponents or sundry monsters, you may find the
Rest a most entertaining distraction!
^L^C-^W When at levels 1 & 2, the player is protected against attack
(both on your local realm and from InterBBS attacks) by the Realm
Authorities to give the new player a chance to start before being
inundated by attacks. As of version 2.21, you can only stay on these
levels for a total of one (real time) month maximum. If you are on
level 1, a month has passed, and you still haven't gone to level 2,
then the game will automatically promote you to level 2, regardless of
your statistics. You'll be given just enough experience to make that
level. Likewise, if you have been playing for 2 months and you are
still not past level 2, the game will promote you automatically to
level 3. No automatic promotions take place on players out of Realm
Protection, ie, equal to or greater than level 3. The number of days
you've been playing the game is displayed now on the your personal
statistics screen so these low level players can track when the game
will promote them if theyÆre interested. A 'month' in this respect
actually equals 30 days, not one calander month.
^L^C-^W Depending on the amount of alcohol you have consumed recently, youÆll
be anything from completely sober to completely smashed. Your state of
enebriation is displayed for you on your personal statistics screen.
^H^WChanges affecting Sysops
^B────────────────────────
^L^C-^W In certain circumstances, Self Correction processing in Knetin would
cause the mail type on outbound nodes to be modified from 'Direct' to
'Hold'. Fixed.
^L^C-^W 'Local' is now set on .msg attributes in addition to 'killsent' and
'fileattach'. 'Crash' and 'Hold' are still optional through the
Manager, of course. Apparently the lack of this flag on outbound file
attach messages was causing problems for some mailers.
^L^C-^W NetId's are no longer case sensitive. This is to eliminate problems
where inbound files would be rejected as 'not for this league' because
the Sysop had defined their league in uppercase when the coordinator
has specified lower, or vici-versa.
^L^C-^W Until this release, you could only move through scrollable lists in
the Manager using the up and down arrow keys. Scrollable lists now
respond also to the page up, page down, home and end keys. This makes
navigating through such lists for large networks much easier.
^L^C-^W All Sysop and Realm names in the index file lists in the Manager now
have color codes stripped when displaying. If a color code (eg, ^W =
white) was the first character in a Sysop or Realm name, the sort
sequence would place the name at the end of the list making it hard to
find on occasion.
^L^C-^W The intent of providing the /O override option in Maintenance was to
allow the Sysop to generate recon & network timing requests,
scoreboards, etc on the fly if desired. Unfortunately, some Sysops
were mistreating the facility to run it frequently and give their
players almost unlimited time, fights etc per day, as an override
Maintenance run would also process these options. Using /O from this
point on will still do the global functions such as the timing
requests, but NO player statistics will be rolled over when this
happens. Player stats are only updated on a normal maintenance run
(daily), without the /O and on no other occasion.
^H^WChanges affecting Coordinators
^B──────────────────────────────
^L^C-^W A coordinator node should never have self correction set, as he/she is
logically the central point in the network. If someone had done it
accidentally however, then self correction data arriving from a downlink
would cause the default outbound on the Coordinator realm to be set to a
routed node. Any inbound and outbound processing would terminate until
the problem was fixed as it could find 'No Default Outbound Defined'. If
self correction data arrives for some reason at a Coordinator node now,
the inbound processors will ignore it completely rather than attempt to
(incorrectly) process it.
^L^C-^W As per the 'Sysop Updates' section, the Page Up, Page Down, Home and
End keys are all fully functional in scrollable lists in the Manager.
